SPOTISWOODE

The Spotiswoode estate was built in 1929 by Donald Roebling, the great-grandson of John Augustus Roebling, the builder of the Brooklyn Bridge.

THIS GRAND TUDOR REVIVAL WAS REDESIGNED BY SEAN RUSH IN 2009, A 2 1/2-YEAR COMMISSION TO RESTORE AND REDESIGN THIS HISTORIC ESTATE.

The original interior was richly detailed with quarter sawn oak paneling, carved ceiling beams, molded plaster ceiling ornaments, arched limestone passthroughs, leaded windows and carved limestone fireplaces.

During the restoration every fireplace, decorative surface, wall and ceiling was stripped of layers of white and gold paint.

A small but charming library was lovingly restored to its original quarter sawn oak paneling. Ralph Lauren chairs flank the marble fireplace. Opposite sits an antique velvet Knoll sofa. The brass ceiling fixture was found in Spain.

SEAN HAND PICKED EVERY PIECE OF FURNITURE AND LIGHT FIXTURE ADDED.

In the lushly layered living room, as one example, he chose a 17th century tapestry as a backdrop for an 18th century Chinese rosewood console.

A LOUIS PHILIPPE MIRROR AND ITALIAN MARBLE STATUE OF DANTE REFLECT ON THIS TABLEAU.

But much respect was paid to the estate’s original grandeur. Beautifully restored are the newel post finials of the U shaped staircase, each an individual carved likeness: the original architect,  builder, plasterer, head foreman, surveyor, carpenter, electrician, and plumber. Donald Roebling celebrated the craftsmen who worked on his home and Sean has carried on the celebration.
